Assuming you are refering to a Selected range anyway - Having Selected the Range:
NUMBEROFROWS = ActiveSheet.Range(ActiveWindow.Selection.Address).Rows.Count

Otherwise, you can tell Excel to select for you: (Given you've selected a Start{top} location first)
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlDown)).Select
