I am launching three websites and get told different methods for promoting them on the internet. Which is the better? SEO or directories or simply getting as much coverage as possible?

SEO is about maximizing your position in the search engines when users type in whatever they are searching for.
If you do not rank on the first page when they do this then you are missing all the people who use search engines to find what they want. Which is almost everybody!

The best and sometimes only way to improve your ranking is to have more sites link to yours. The more sites that google crawls that has a link to your site the higher your sites ranking will go. META tags are largely ignored and actual web content (Text within your pages) defines how your page is found when a search is made. So make sure you have relevant text, specifically in your home page and linked pages that the search engines will understand. You can also pay.

The majority of people turn to search engines to find what they are looking for. Which is why SEO is so popular. Directories really don't bring in a lot of traffic, they are used mostly yo build PR. You can buy ads, links or banners.

i know someone who owns a websight. Deffinetly pay google to list your sight. is cheap and u get ALOT of traffic rolling through.
