A BAROMETRIC SENSOR WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH YOUR M.A.P. SENSOR IT DETERMINES AIR FUEL MIXTURES SO YOUR CAR WILL ALTERNATE BETWEEN A RICH AND LEAN FUEL MIXTURE THE BAROMETRIC SENSOR WORKS OFF OF ALTITUDE AND BAROMETRIC PRESSURE. THE MAIN PURPOSE THOUGH IS TO KEEP YOUR CAR FROM LABOR KNOCKING FROM TO MUCH FUEL AND NOT ENOUGH AIR

It is one of the many sensors on computer controlled engines. It plays a relatively minor role compared with some of the other sensors, but it is nevertheless used on many vehicles, especially GM.

All modern cars have a fuel air mixture which is calculated by a computer. The computer "decides" what mix of fuel and air to "feed" to the engine using inputs from a variety of sensors. The barometric pressure sensor is one of these.

As you go higher in altitude (above sea level) the air gets thinner. Thus a car driving in Miami would need a different fuel/air mix than a car driving in Denver!

The barometric pressure sensor "tells the computer" how high the car is above sea level so it can provide a fuel/air mixture appropriate for the altitude that you are driving at.

This is only one of many sensors used by the computer: for more check out my website: http://econofix.com/computer.html

it would be something on a high end car that would detirmine the actual air pressure and fine tune the combustion to meet the quality of the air, as in if it is a high barometer, that means hot and dry, so it would have to burn richer, if it is low and moist it would burn leaner since the fuel will be heavier, it would most likely be somewhere in the air intake tube, and i would guess only BMW, Lexus, and other expensive cars would have it.
