Though their music resembles some Buzzcocks, their actions show they are not punk.
No punk band would EVER play with U2. Next thing you know we'll have a punk band full of Reagan apologists.

They WERE punk-esque, their very very first album, the one before Dookie, I can't remember the name of it....was semi-punk. They are not now, in any sense of the word, punk. The word I would use to describe them would be annoyingwhinysappysellout teenybopperpseudopunkb/s
so...Pop.

Watch American Hardcore. Now that's punk.
Bands like the Dead Kennedys, Fear, TSOL, Black Flag, 7 Seconds, Angry Samoans... They were punk. Green Day is NOT punk.

either combo of punk-alternative. or alternative mainstream. but defiantly not pop. they started out as a strictly punk band, but they have strayed away from that.
