i don't think the golden rule is universal. in the case of masochists, the rule cannot apply. also its really subject to personal prejudices. A person can say, if I were X, then I would want to have Y done to me. For example, "if I were a heathen, I would want to be forcefully converted because it would be in my best interest, even though i may resist it because i don't know better." My nomination for a universal standard is "do not cause any unnecessary suffering." In any situation, it would never be justifiable to cause unnecessary harm/suffering. Of course what is unnecessary can be disputed, but the general strandard cannot be. No moral theory could ever say that it is justifiable to cause unnecessary suffering. Under no possible circumstance would it be justifiable to cause unnecessary suffering. Again, it can be a vague criteria, but any totally universal criteria probably will have to be. And I don't think that "unnecessary" is a vague as it seems. We could take it to mean that "in pursuit of a goal, we should take the least harm-causing route to that goal", and that all goals should themselves be evaluated on whether or not they are necessary to fulfill more ultimate goals. So for example, being happy is an ultimate goal, but earning money is not (everybody always earns money in order to be happy; earning money is a means toward the end of being happy). Thus, if earning money is causing a certain amount of suffering, but one could attain happiness another way without causing that level of suffering, one should pursue that alternative route. They should do so because it leads to the ultimate ends, and does so by causing less suffering. It would not be justified to cause suffering, in this case, just in order to make money, since money is not the ultimate end.

In every single thing that comes up in life that ask for a choice, a decision to be made, you are left with 2 areas to work with; Positive and Negative. In every way, choose positive. How do you know if its a positive choice? Your emotions will tell you because it will feel good. Trust this, every time. Soem people will argue this saying, that is the selfish road. Dont listen to others opinions, listen to yourself and your emotions.
Good luck

There's are a few. The golden rule = Those with the gold make the rules. Everything is relative.

The question is about asking for a 'common master key' to life itself !
Yes, the spiritual path is supposed to reveal such a key from within... when the perception deepens beyond just the sense organs !

No. If [you] picked out any situation from the extreme ends of things, there is no universal rule for deciding on anything.

You should respond to matters individually, analyzing what is best for each situation.

there is no one standard.

Hey Alexis Rae,

Respect - The golden rule - treat other people they way you want to be treated - do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
