I always read the backcovers of both of the books first and then I decide which book sounds like it would be the most interesting and fun to read. Another thing I do is look and see how many page numbers are in both books. Depending on if you like to read a small book, or a bigger book. I would go about picking the book that way. I hope these suggestions are helpful to you.

Usually I have 2 books "going on" at the same time - 1 is non-fiction, and the other 1 is ficiton. So when I am in the mood for fiction, that's the one I read; if I want a change of pace, then I go to the non-fiction. For which books (out of all books to read), I usually find good things on the 'new book shelf' at the public library. Or look at the NY Times Best Sellers List and choose 1 from the fiction list, and chose 1 from the non-fiction list, and have those books on your nightstand, ready to read. If you read those 2 books, then you can keep up with current book conversation at a party.

I ask my friends for suggestions (friends often have the same taste in books as you do) or read perhaps the first 2 or so pages to see how it is written and whether or not it sounds interesting.
Sometimes it is good to read a book by an author who you've read books by in the past but other times their other books aren't as good as others by them.
I hope this helps, happy reading!

My library has everything in it. I try to read a wide variety of works. I usually have a rotation system. I'll read a nonfiction like a biography or autobiography one week, the next week I will read SciFi, then I'll read through a science book, and then I'll pick up a mainstream fiction. The only genre I'm not interested in is porn.

I usually end up pulling several from the shelf to read. I start by reading the descriptions of each. Then I might start the first chapter in each. Then usually one emerges the winner in that process. The rest are put aside until the first one is done.

i always have a back-up collection of book, some that i never tire of reading, that i can go back to when im struggling to find something new to read... i can read these and then drop them half-way when something good to read comes along, cos i always know how my favourites are going to end!

walk up and down the isles in the local library till I see something I like, go with an author I like, or reread an old favorite that I haven't read for a while.

i'd say decide on the one that appeals to you most at the time, and decide to read the second one next.

I usually start a couple at a time, then one will usually win out so I finish that one first.
