a cooing noise behind my house which is heavily wooded area. I live in Mississippi and I have no idea what animal this could be. My mother said she heard a similar sound one night. Any ideas what it could be.?

I would bet it is an owl. Try listening to some of the sound clips on the first sight in my sources. The barn owl sounds alot like a scream. Listen to the "typical call" on the first source.

The second source is a UK source, but it has pretty good sound files for owls.

Quite possibly a cat (bobcat, housecat, mountain lion) or perhaps even a fox. Cats tend to sound like a female human shreiking.

well round these parts its panthers they scream like a woman in distress im in texas east texas in livingston so it may that where you live
