enough for 2 weeks (business days) in order
to not look like you're, well, living out of your car

I would want to be able to stretch my wardrobe to allow me to make it through the week and only wash on the weekend. So, if you work 5 days/week, I would buy 3 pairs of pants, 2 skirts, all in black--keep it simple and professional. Purchase 5 shirts in different colors to dress up the outfits. Then each month allow yourself to purchase one new item to add to your collection. Make sure all pieces are interchangeable, and before long you will have a not so minimum, exciting working wardrobe!

At least 5 full outfits (5 tops / 5 bottoms). Pick colors that will work together, so you can mix & match different tops & bottoms to make different outfits. Neutral colors for the bottoms w/ a couple of neutral tops and colored tops to add some interest. You can change the look by adding cool (inexpensive) jewelry, belts, scarves. Think of color families: black/white/gray with punches of color (like red or fuschia), or cream/tan/brown with a punch of turquoise or orange. I like the idea of adding one article monthly, as another answer suggested - like jacket or sweater to layer over - creating yet another outfit! Good luck!

At least 7 mix and match outfits.
