I took my kids to Mcdonalds today and when we ordered a happy meal they asked if it was for a boy or a girl. Because they give the girls barbies and the boys cars. My daughter wants a car and this question makes her feel like because she is a girl she is suppose to want the barbie like she is weird if she wants the car. Does any one else think asking boy or girl is rude?

I worked at McDonalds for two years. Politely mention to the cashier that they should change their wording when they ask. I didn't think about it until I had some one say something to me. It's not rude, but they have to know which toy to put in the bag. People would be even more upset if we just started putting in random toys without asking.

I think it would be better for them to ask which toy your child wants. But at the same time, their toys change constantly so it's easier for the employees to generalize in that girls will most likely want the Barbies and boys the cars. I know I'd rather have the car too! Next time I would ask what the toys are before you answer, that will help your daughter get the toy she wants.

Most girls who have older brothers want to take after their brother and get the ''stereotypical boy toys". I do think that they rely on the stereotypes a little too much, and should take into consideration that not all girls want Barbies and all boys and Hot Wheels cars. I do think they should ask what type of toy they want. I do find it slighly rude, but the people are also just doing their job. :) Hope this helps lol.

Don't you mean OUR boy Neilo! Thats just Typical of you saying that! Sorry about that folks! But yes OUR little boy always ends up with a girls toy, maybe just once he has received a boys toy. I remember the car in front of us once, looked in their happy meal and asked the person who served them to swap it for a girls toy coz they landed with a boys. We never bother because we only chuck it anyway when we get home! I don't think McDonalds has had any good toys yet!

i do think its rude i have 2 boys ages 2 and 4 the 2 yr old wants the Barbie and the 4 yr old wants the car but i guess in that case you can ask for one of each. But regardless of gender specification a child should be able to chose what he or she wants more.

That isn't rude at all! Don't you think it would also be the opposite like people getting offended if McDonalds doesn't ask if they want the toy for a boy or girl? I think its not rude and I actually think that's pretty cool compared to when I was a kid and the meals and prizes were all the same!

What do they call this? Oh I learned it in religion. It is a word that means that if you are a boy you are supposed to want cars/explosions/guns if you are a girl barbie/make-up/fashion. It is called something like sexual happiness or something. It doesn't mean you are straight are gay it just means how the media views everything and the stereotypes and stuff. Sexual childhood or something.

I have been put off with this situation as well. I was a tomboy as a child with two older brothers. I always felt the sting of injustice when my brothers got cool toys like trains and Star Wars stuff while I got girly-barf stuff.
I think the cashiers at the window should ask, "Would your child like a Barbie or Hotwheels?" I don't think it's too much to ask of them.

In that manner, yes. I got a Happy Meal strictly for the Ariel premiums.

It would be better to ask Car or Doll

When I was a kid, it seemed they usually asked "car or barbie?" instead of "girl or boy?"...they should make this standard for all McDonalds.
