or what types of trees might be bad for a house foundation.

If you are going to place a small flowering tree near a house, I'd space it so that the trunk is at least 6-10' from the house it's self. If you don't have that kind of room, you'll have to choose something more shrubby.

We don't know what USDA hardiness zone you're in, so our suggestions will be all over the place. Take some of them to your local independent garden center and ask them if they stock any of them... that may also help shorten the list.

I'm in USDA hardiness zone 5... my thoughts are for Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum), it doesn't bloom, but the purple foliage is nice. I like most Dogwoods, especially Korean (Cornus kousa) and Cornelian Cherry Dogwood (Cornus mas). If you want something a little more different look at Persian Parottia (Parottia persica) or Golden chain tree (Laburnum x watereri).

The roots of these trees will "mirror" their branches... and are unlikely to cause damage to the foundation of a house. Especially if they are 6-10' away... give them 50+ years... maybe the answer will be a little different... most of us will have renovated our landscapes by then.

I hope that this helps
Good luck-

Japanese maple or purple plum, both colorful and small .. but suggest 10 ft from house at the least .... all trees close to home in time may affect home foundation.

try dwarf maples, or birds nest firs, dwarf firs and pines, dwarf junipers,
Do not put a willow tree close to a house. The roots go very deep and search for water, they are bad about damaging pipes.
Don't put a tree whose height will eventually grow up to the electric/phone line wires.

Flowering dogwoods are pretty, but I think any tree can cause problems if planted too close to a house. Arborvitae bushes would be better. They get really tall, but the roots are shallower.
