I would highly recommend john Milton's Paradise lost & Paradise found. He wrote these "as a way of justifying the ways of God to men." It deals with the struggle between God and Satan and his fall from grace. I am not religious yet enjoyed it throughly.

Maybe "Cosmos and Psyche", most people find it fascinating, but it does have some alternative ideas, so read the insets on the book cover.

Depending on how serious your father is... "Meditation & Dreamwork" by Tara Ward is a very very spiritual book.
