My sister is having the same problem, and she never injured her big toe. Her doctor checked her blood sugar, because she's overweight. Some people can be diabetic and not know it. If the sugar in your blood gets really high, it can cause some damage to your blood vessels, especially the small ones in your feet. Sometimes diabetes can cause nerve damage too. If it continues you should see you doctor. By the way my sis is borderline diabetic.

Check the nail on the toe could be causing pressure or is the foot swollen from all the hiking Then you could try ice and elevate.
Is it burning sensation also if so it could be athletes foot then you would have to get new boots to kill the fungus .
Make sure you do toe exercise every day by distracting the toe out and rotating it in a circular motion rub the pads with lotion or Vaseline and put old socks on at night over the feet should help with stiffness soreness and pain
also check for Diabetes when you go to the doctor.

Try a different shoe. If it doesn't go away in a few days, get your nervous system checked out. Might be a pinched nerve in your back or something irritating that part of your brain. I know it sounds goofy, but it's good to catch things early. Just don't let it slide. Take care and good luck!

If your wearing boots, you probably need to change after hiking to something you can get some of the old circulation going. That and you could have a mad build up of tough skin on your foot. Excessive walking make your skin on your feet mad tough, so take some time to get a pedicure.

It actually could be a nerve in your back that is being pinched. You might want to see a chiropractor. They can give you adjustments and teach you some exercise to help alleviate it.
