Its usually when u see those bulletins, and they have some words written in blue that u can click on. When u do it takes u to a fake login page, and they get your email address and password. the page looks just like the myspace login page, except in the address bar it says something different. its always those crazy bulletins like "look at this girl" or I have 8 more picks or ringtones or whatever. Thats just how it is on myspace, but people do it all over the computer.

In computing, phishing is a criminal activity using social engineering techniques. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out using email or an instant message, although phone contact has been used as well

It is a practice used by people without conscience playing on the weaknesses (and greed) of others to try to get their money, one way or the other. Some offer inheritances from an unknown relative - but tell you that you have to pay the taxes first, or, they will imitate a bank and tell you to verify your information, etc...

If anyone tries to get you to verify your information, immediately delete the file and contact the bank or credit card company to see if they do in fact need any information. Under no circumstances should you respond to the e-mail.

Short version: Phishing is basically when someone pretends to be someone else in order to get your passwords.

Example 1 - getting a email from someone other then PayPal saying they are from PayPal and need you to give them your password

Example 2 - Being sent to a site that looks just like PayPal and being asked to login
