Seriously, I have seen this exact extract or similar in many political answers on this forum. At least 70 percent of the world's population are allowed to speak freely about thier circumstances without fear of recrimination...really. It's even encouraged. I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it a bit scary that this attitude seems so prevalent.

I'm far from anti-American - some of the most open minded and gifted people I have met are from the States. I'm not anti any race of people. I am however, anti-blind ignorance.

Yes... people really do believe that drivel... even despite the fact that here in America our free speech is getting less and less free all the time.
And even worse, those same people operate under the delusion that this imaginary superiority somehow compensates for all of the evil the US dishes out. It's one thing to wrongly believe one's country is best, but it's even worse to think being 'best' could somehow justify the atrocities and failings in both domestic and foreign US policy. But that's America... why strive for Utopia when we can settle for convincing ourselves that we're 'better than the neighbors'? (sigh)
On a side note, if I had a dollar for every time somebody told me "if you don't appreciate your liberties, you're free to leave", then I just might have enough money to leave... sadly it's beginning to feel like there are no safe corners left in this world.

Actually, this is what the regime wants people to believe. How else would they justify the "war against terror" and against evildoers who " hate our way of life"?
Sadly, people in the USA are very xenophobic and not open to new ideas . They have no idea what goes on in the rest of the world.

It's very true. In fact, we're not even, by far the most secular or the most advanced government. Perhaps we were at one time, but much of Western Europe has now surpassed us. It's amazing how much people don't know (I don't even want to imagine how much there is that I don't know!).

I think your question should be reworded to why do some AMERICANS think that the USA is...... ...sometimes americans have a very limited global viewpoint..they often don't see beyond their borders...sorry, I'm not trying to put anyone down here..just some observations of mine.

If I say yes, will I sound completely ignorant?
All we hear about over here is how you can get killed for speaking your mind in other countries. I blame public schools, they've practically drilled that into our heads by now.
