Alot of people say they couldn't be more different but I have a cat that acts like a dog and know a dog that acts like a cat. Neither have pets of the opposite species in the house.

Though they did evolve under pretty different circumstances, the behavior of both domestic cats and dogs is due, for the most part, to their environment today. Dogs and cats are now evolving to survive in a human's world. It's survival of the cutest, most personable and most attractive.
Humans want most of the same things in dogs and cats, (calm demeanor, pretty coat colors, no shedding) so it can only be expected that the behaviors of both would become more similar over time. There aren't many differences left. After years and years of selecting the one animal out of the litter that comes over to you and licks your hand, leaving the rest to their fates, human selection has taken the place of natural selection and is affecting our pets today.
