I grew up with the Who. Sort of; by the time I had a radio, the first song I heard was "I Can See for Miles"; I heard "My Generation" belatedly. I think his guitar playing was wonderful back then and unique and influential. "Live at Leeds" is one of the best live albums of all time, in part because of it. And I agree that the musical part of his songwriting was often remarkable. Lyrically, I was never very impressed. Tommy, the idea of a rock opera, seemed very clever the year it came out and very silly within a few years, long before it became a bad movie. He's written some songs with great lyrics, but an awful lot of songs that were musically enjoyable and lyrically bland or embarrassing or - very often- just creepily perverse. Enough so that when police found kiddie porn on his computer, it didn't entirely shock me. I suppose he's a bit like Ray Davies in that he wrote a lot of songs about oddball characters, with British sensibilities I don't share, but both wrote a collection of songs full of power chords that made my adolescence and that of many others, and that seem to have stood the test of time. I'm more enthusiastic about the songs that are simple pure rock music than the Tommy and Quadrophenia sorts, or the then-revolutionary tape loops on "Won't Get Fooled Again" that are so boring to listen to now. Bottom line for me is that I think of him as a great guitarist from a certain era in the late 60s and early 70s, and as someone who wrote perhaps a dozen or so great songs, mostly not great lyrically.

It's a great song, but I think the title best short song ever written is going to vary from taste to taste, so I can't garuntee that it's the only best short song ever written, but it's surely one of the greats!

short song? isn't it like 4 minutes long? i love pete. he's my hero and the reason i started playing guitar. my favorite song of his is "heart to hang onto" he originally did on the ronnie lane record and recorded it in 2000 or so with eddie vedder on his live for maryville record. you can see a performance of it on youtube from when eddie and pete did letterman.

I think, "Tatoo" is the one of his best.
