2. Character - central/secondary person(s) to the storyline.
3. Plot - the conflict(s) occurring in the storyline.
4. Images -symbolic use of real or inanimate objects.

Sometimes, the fourth characteristic (or fifth, I suppose) can be mood. Mood is basically the overall tone/atmosphere of the story.
