There are a few ways to locate a suspect leak in the roof. They are as follows:

1) Have a friend spray the roof with a hose when you are in the attic checking for leaks. Make sure that you only step on the joists in the attic - do not step between them unless you want to patch up the ceiling or, worse, fall through.

2) Look at the ceiling throughout the home in an attempt to locate the discolored spot(s).

3) Get on the roof and look for missing shingles or cracked/missing tiles. If it is a comp (shingles) roof then you should also check for exposed paper, cracks in the tar around vents (e.g. turbine or ridge), and gaps between the metal and shingles in the valleys.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
