1968 original black and white version of THe Night of the Living Dead--that movie scared me so bad that I had nightmares about it and I still do 16 years later after I first watched it to this day I will never go near a cemetery after dark or eat chicken legs because it reminds me of that one scene in the movie where the truck blew up and the zombies where munching on body parts

But Saw 1 and Saw 2 are really scary and pyscho so I would recommend watching them

Heres some suggestions(all great, not cheesy or retarded)

Halloween
The Omen
The Exorcist
Carrie
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
If you chose one of these, chose the original first version.

When a Stranger Calls 1979 version
Starring Carol Kane and Charles Durning
This film made major waves when it was released in '79 thanks to the first 20 minutes, which were genuinely scary. Babysitter Kane keeps getting prank calls from some sicko. When she calls police to trace the call, they phone her back and tell her to get out of the house—the calls are coming from inside
No blood and guts- pure psycological terror !
Scared me silly- esp when i babysat during that time !

I found "The Grudge" to be very intelligently written and directed, and smartly scary without buckets of blood.
