I understand there are a lot of black people who find it offensive. But why do they say it? You don't hear white people calling each other honkies and crackers

The same reason your friends and family may call you names and you are cool with that, but when someone you are not close to does the same, you feel offended. Similarities unite people.

Black people don't really care when another black person uses it because they know that the other person isn't using it in the same way that a white person would. It is a form of how they interact with each other, and there is nothing wrong with that. White people probably call other white people nicknames or other things which would be offensive if used by someone of another race. So there you are, I hope this helps!

BTW, I was just talking about this very topic in my Intercultural Communications class this week, and that is essentially the answer that the African Americans in my class gave. So you sorta have it "straight".

Hope this clears up the issue for you!

Why is it so important in the first place? I see people call each other names all the times in jest but I do not find it offensive if I cannot call them the same thing. I call my best friend a b*tch, but no one else better not or she will take thier head off. There has to be a line drawn. I am black and I choose not to do it. There is black people that do it and it is thier choice.

This response is not meant to imply anything, but I have a unique point of view about this issue in itself. So this is directed to no one in particular:

Here's my question: who cares? If one can acknowlege that there really is no need to use it, then why Blacks can say it and Whites can't is irrelevant. I feel that this argument is really about a non-issue. People acknowledge that the word has a racist connotation...so...again... why is there a need to use it to the point to go as far as to dispute why or why not? If someone is willing to argue about what I can do, then it appears to me that this individual wants the same "privilege" (for COMPLETE lack of a better word); which in this case is the N-word. Why do people want a pass/permission to say the word?

I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE JUST ASKING, and I am NOT implying that you like to spew the N-word. I'm NOT attacking you personally. What I am saying is that the fact that there is even argument out there about this is indicative of people's motives. I've heard people try to explain "I don't use the word, or want to, but why....?" To which I ask why they care. There really is nothing to gain, so "I just want to know" is not always a truthful answer. And I am yet to get a response other than that.

But I am not here to speak for other Black people. I can just speak for myself, and that's my point of view on it.

the human race needs to remember the "N" word derived from hatred. As a people we have those with class civilized, educated
and self respecting(my category) Then we have another area which our society hasn't named. They are prisoners in our prisons and the subculture of wanna-be's. I believe this isn't named yet either. But my opinion is these are the 2 that use the most hatred in a civilized society. So why not use hate derived words if you fit in those areas. I don't believe anybody who finds it offensive should have it in their vocabulary.

It's a way a neutralising the effects of the word. It's ironical, mocking. It's about holding off a power group, taking over thier tools.

I don't know but i think it is so stupid that they and even other races call each other that. Im hispanic and every now and then I hear either some other hispanics or even asians calling each other the N word. Im like WTF your not black so why the hell are u calling each other that. I don't even think black people should refer themselves with that word. Its just not a good word to call anyone.
