Type of health care, Health Maintenance Organization. This type of provider allows you generally to have cheaper premiums and small or no co-pays, as opposed to a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization). However, it keeps costs and expenses down by cutting deals with certain doctors, dentists, etc and you are allowed to see ONLY those persons within the HMO network. With the PPO, you choose whoever you want. There are generally lots of limitations on coverage with an HMO as well and they are far more likely to refuse to pay for your treatments even if deemed necessary by your doctor. The HMO can overrule the opinion of the doctor.
