It seems to me that America is facing two big problems, and both have to do with the evolving way we view human rights:
1. Middle east policy (the senseless deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent arabs); and
2. Immigration.
It seems to me those who advocate that arab blood is less valuable than american blood and those who oppose immigration are the same people- those who do not beleive that ALL individuals have the same rights.
It seems people either feel for Iraqis because you know they're people too, or you think they're all terrorists with no rights...
It seems people either support an immigrants right to work and live where he pleases, or feel that people should have to jump through "hoops" to have the basic human right of travel.
It appears to me a crisis and we need an answer to this question- does the rest of the world have the right to life, liberty, and he pursuit of happiness or not? If so, lets get out of iraq and leave the so called "illegals" alone.

"Please define what you mean by "human rights" and whence they come. "
I guess I should-
"We hold these truths to be self evident- that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by thier creator with CERTAIN INALIEABLE RIGHTS, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..."
Thomas Jefferson, The Declaration of Independance.
Not so "self-evident" anymore I guess.

Hey Hearts- Your wrong. Dead wrong. completely wrong.
No veteran gave us any rights. Period. Our rights come from, and our preserved by, judges and lawyers who keep YOUR government from taking away your rights.
The last time a veteran died for american rgiths was 1845.
God I hate people who say the military preserves our freedom, as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and every intelligent person knows, the greatest threat to freedom is always the military.

I don't think America EVER had respect for human rights. Remember the slaughter of the Native Americans?! That was America's first human rights atrocity, and it has continued right through to this day. America's policy in the Middle East is simply what they did to the Natives writ large.

You seek the idealistic, perfect world in a real, imperfect world.
We simply cannot afford to open our borders. This would be the only way to assure that people "have the basic human right of travel." An admiral idea - however, very unrealistic.
People from all over the world certainly do have the "right" to life, liberty and happiness - they do not, however, have the right to seek these things illegally in any country they choose.
And, it is my opinion that in order to deserve human rights, one must first act human - and the indiscriminate murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children for a demented ideology is not a characteristic human trait.
So, let's get out of Iraq? Leave the illegals alone?
These are admirable ideas - they just are not realistic solutions to the problems and concerns presently facing our nation.

This administration has thrown out 1. The constitution 2. The Bill of Rights 3. Respect for International Law . They don't care about Americans- Katrina, Mexicans -A border Fence? Remember the Berlin Wall? Christians - they mock their own supporters. Conservatives- they are bankrupting the country. They say they are pro life. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm glad you quoted from the D of I, but you stopped short. Keep going another few sentences.
Reading some of these posts you get the feeling some people think the USA is the greatest problem in the world and if we could get rid of the USA the world would be a wonderful place where everyone was happy, or at least a germ of that idea.

Are you saying that legal American Citizens do not have the right to be protected against illegal entry in to this country and the criminal element that enters with it? Are you saying the legal American Citizen should tolerate paying higher taxes so criminals can continue to abuse the system the legal citizens have in place in the USA?
You want to leave other countries alone, so are you saying when they ask the US for help we should turn out backs on them? Their blood is not worth the risk we take trying to help the majority of the people in these countries? Let them starve or continued to be tortured by corrupt, selfish dictators; is this your solution?

Nobody's blood is less valuable, but freedom isn't "free" either. You have your "human rights" because:
Realize:
It is the VETERAN , not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the VETERAN , not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the VETERAN , not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the VETERAN , not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the VETERAN , not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the VETERAN , not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.
As for illegal (not so-called because they broke the law) immigrants, just like all of the immigrants who have been coming into this country has come, they need to do it legally. Don't invite me into your home, I will just break in and I will stay because that's my right according to your logic.

I think America is loosing Constitutional rights, Bush says that the terrorist hate us for our freedom, so he is going to help them by taking our freedoms from us. I think America,"God forbid", could survive another 911 attack, but I don't think America can surrvive state approved torture. We are suppose to be the good guys, aren't we? It seems that we are becoming just like the very people we are fighting.

That is my concern, these so called religious repuglicans have become terrorist themselves with the invasion of Iraq, they have lost respect for the human race, I am sure that you will get answers to this question that will prove that out. They have no respect for the environment and will choose money now over it every time, and in time that is going to spell trouble for the human race. The bombs, the gunfire and the water boarding, the secret prisons, gitmo, Mans inhumanity to man is exemplified by these evil people.

I had a friend who was totally against the war, until she went to Iraq for a few years. Now, for some reason, she's glad we're at war...
I'm going to ask you: Have you ever been out of this country before?
