An iPod is a specific brand of mp3 player, one that is very popular.
So popular, in fact, that some people say "iPod" when they mean any mp3 player. Kind of like Kleenex for tissue.

No difference. The iPod is Apple's MP3 player and more. The iPod is very popular and it comes in many colors and sizes, mini iPod, iPod Nano, iPod shuffle.
You can play it in your car or at home via an FM transmitter or you can dock in a surround speaker system or just listen via earphones.

And yes... name and popularity sells... must have an iPod.

Yes, it is mostly the name. Anything the iPod can do, several thousand other MP3 players can aswell.
Oh, and, iPods commonly have problems like cracking screens and viruses.
