35,000 = 3.5 * 10^4

.00046 = 4.6 * 10^-4

So, 35,000 * .00046 = 3.5 * 10^4 * 4.6 * 10^-4 = 16.1 = 1.61 * 10

You want the number in scientific notation to be between one and ten times 10 to some power.

35,000 would be 3.5 times 10 to the power that would bring you back to the original number, so in this case the power is 4 because 3.5 x 10 to the 4th is 3.5 x 10.000 or 35,000

.00046 would be 4.6 x 10 to the -4 because you would have to move the decimal point 4 places to the left (same as dividing by 10,000)

You want one digit in front of the decimal point.
35,000 = 3.5 x 10^4
the power of 10 is how many places you moved the decimal point.

.00046 = 4.6 x 10^-4
It's negative because the decimal point moved to the left.

Yes, yes, all of the answers are correct, but they don't really tell you how to do scientific notation! All you have to remember is a simple anagram: LARS. It stands for "Left Add Right Subtract". The Left/Right means which way you have to move your decimal point to get only 1 non-zero digit before the decimal point, and the Add/Subtract means the number of powers of ten you need to add or subtract from the current power of 10, for example:

35000 --> Move the decimal point to the LEFT 4 places to get only the 3 before the decimal point --> 3.5000

Since we had to move the decimal point to the Left 4 places, the we ADD 4 from the current power of 10. The power of 10 for the number 35,000 is 0 (i.e. 35000 = 35000x10^0), so your answer is: 3.5x10^4

Your other question of 0.00046 --> You have to Move the decimal point to the Right 4 places to get only the 4 before the decimal point: 4.6. Since we had to move the decimal point to the Right 4 places, we SUBTRACT 4 from the current power of 10. The power of 10 for the number 0.00046 is 0 (i.e. 0.00046 = 0.00046x10^0), so your answer is: 4.6x10^-4.

Another example, is: can you simplify 562.23 x 10^-15?

We have to move the decimal 2 places to the LEFT, so we add 2 to the current power of 10 to get: 5.62 x 10^-13.

Good Luck!

(35,000)(.00046)
(3.5*10^4)(4.6*10^(-4))=16.1*10^0=1.61*10^1
