I received 2 awful natured phonecalls just after midnight tonight (l'm in the UK). I work at a hotel, alone, at night. Its isolated and l've only worked here 5 weeks. I had to listen to various criminal messages (don't want to repeat them, the sort on crimewatch UK) thinking l was holding to speak to the caller. He said he was from BT emergency room and a guest had triggered the system by using certain words and there were phonecalls from people wanting room service/ sandwhiches to crime related. The duty manager advised me to call BT who are aware, the police have been told too. The caller phoned back trying to book a room and l kept saying call back in the morning to speak to reservations, caller started asking where did l live, naming local towns and roads.....its takes all sorts! Some people have nothing better to do and l'm upset and angry. Has anyone else received these nasty calls?. The caller definitely aimed at this hotel & prob many others tonight. Any advice appreciated!!

Phone call came through on the switchboard straight to the hotel, caller could have dialled various numbers allocated for this hotel. We do not have the facility to get callers numbers and l'm sure it would be with held anyway. Thanks for the repsonse. Those crazy bored nutters are probably readig this now knowing it's them - sad people!

Yes, thinking about leaving, l don't want to say too much as the caller knows where l work of course, BT (British Telecom for those abroad) say this is a common complaint, doesn't make me feel any better, especially when he called back saying he used to live in the area!. my duty manager said not to bother speaking to people like that..too late now !

Hi again. Phoencalls come directly through to the hotel, there is no operator, thats me!. My partner is asleep in the lounge at the moment, l didn't want to be left alone...l'm not happy, they can sack me for having him here but with no CCTV they don't exactly care! Believe it or not this is a 4* hotel on the south east coast, no security ! I worked a few miles away in a Margate hotel and the security was brilliant, l'm very dissapointed.

I would seek alternative employment. Is your safety worth the minimal pay you receive for the job you do? There are psychopaths out there that may or may not be for real. You never know. If you have notified the proper authorities and the situation is not being taken care of, I would apply for employment elsewhere. There are other jobs out there.

The responses from our overseas buddies are helpful & encouraging, but, sadly the UK phone system is antiquated.
I would just suggest you have the proprietors of your hotel upgrade to a modern system with caller ID & suggest to them that all witheld IDs are rejected. (This may cost them business short term, as most PXs are witheld - corporate business could be jeapordised.) Or else, try diverting the hotel's number to your cellphone... That IS traceable by the authorities, even if the number is not displayed on your cellphone.
Good luck! And remember, he's the nutter! Not you.

In addition to the above answers...

Make double sure you have an escort to your car from the building and the other way around.

While driving be aware of all vehicles around you, especially FOLLOWING you. Don't go directly home. Drive in well lit, populated areas for a bit to find out if you're being followed. If you think you are in deed being followed drive straight to the nearest police station, keep your engine running, in gear and honk your horn to attract their attention. When they come out to see what is going on tell them what type of vehicle it was that was following you. IF you can SAFELY get a license tag number from that vehicle, give it to them. Make sure you have someone to escort you from your car to your home upon arrival and, again, the other way around.

if you have a cell phone, i would leave the caller on the lanline and call the cops and let them listen to it. then they can take action. i dont know if you have it there, but here in the us we can dial *69 and it will give you the number (unless its a blocked number) so you can at least know who the call is coming from

Ask the operators to put you on monitored calls, unless the other person gives a true number they will not be put through. Or put your phone on diversion, again this goes through the operator first.

Just keep your answer cool and stay polite but if you think these calls are bad, ignore them and if they insist, call your duty manager to help you answer these calls.
