Your filter is working properly. A pleco is a very lazy fish believe it or not. As for your alegea you should buy a chemical alegea destroyer that you can buy at any local pet store or wal-mart. Your drinking water supply has a microscopic alegea bloom in it and usually when it hits the light from your tank it blossom's. Use the alegea destroyer as recommended and it will keep your tank from turning green. And make sure you do a partial water change on your tank using a syphon also bought from your local pet store or wal-mart. Make sure when you syphon you syphon from the gravel not the top of the water you want to suck out as much of the debris as possible but only change 25 to 30 % of the water at one time. Or you could opt to buy a water python syphon system which drains and fills your tank for you with ease.

Sounds like the filter is working if it is being filled up with waste from the tank. If there is that much gunk, you may need to do a partial water change siphoning from the bottom of the tank and clean the filter including the impeller out.

yes it does sound like it is working fine you may have to chnage the filter pad sooner and do more water changes with a gravel vac to help your pleco and filter out
