It means "species", plural. "sp." means "species", singular. Kind of confusing to have the same word form for singular and plural.

"Apis sp." means a species of bee in the genus Apis.
"Apis spp." means several species of bees in the genus Apis, or all species of bees in the genus Apis.

This applies throughout animal taxonomy, not just for insects.
