It can be very bad. Some women have little problems like no appetite, not being able to get out of bed, not being able to sleep and crying all the time for no reason. Then it can get really bad. Like not being able to bond with your baby and having thoughts about suicide or harming your new baby. So it can get very very bad.

Depends on the level of ppd that you have. PPD as with all depressions is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is estimated that about 80% of new mothers experience some form of ppd of that 80% about 20-25 will require medication and 2-4% will develop psychosis {most notable psychosis case is Andrea Yates}. How bad is it? How would you like to feel worthless, cry all the time, not want to get out of bed, consider suicide on a daily basis, and lets not talk about the mood swings and people not being able to talk to you without you feeling attacked and crying all the time. I suffer from PPD since I gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby 5 months ago and if it wasn't for the medication I'm not sure how I would have made it or how my marriage would have survived.
