I heard of this group that would dress up in medieval-style clothing and create characters such as elves, royalty, and thieves. They would then go some place like a park and play their parts to make some sort of live story. How exactly does this work? What are some rules for winning/loosing or how the different characters can act? What do they do if a non-player talks to them? Is there any fantasy worlds available to use as settings for free, or do they get that from books like Lord of the Rings? I would like to hear any info or experiences you have with live role playing (NOT interested in the online or board-game kind).

Role playing is interesting- it is very freeform and so the objectives are whatever you decide they are.

Although many games do not have rules- most do use special rule books which structure the game or just act as an advice guide. These books often also provide a setting or a method for creating one- which is useful if a pre-existing fiction is not being used. You buy these at comic book stores- independant stores often have extensive links to groups in the area and can give you information as well.

To get clothing you can either make it yourself or attend special fairs- medieval clothing is used by re-enactors, obscure fashion designers, theatre companies and folk musicians as well as roleplayers so is easier to find than other fantasy types.

Many games will have a gamesmaster- they are often only an extra in terms of a character but they set the scene, maintain any written records- e.g of objects acquired or a story if it is being written down and act as referee. If you were a non-player and approached the gamesmaster in character they would usually be delighted and accept you in. However some clubs are quite closed circles- you would need to get someone to introduce you e.g. a comic store owner.

Good luck with it- if you get involved with a sizeable well organised group I'm sure you will have fun!

Role Playing Game is a bout a group of people (over two, or might be one playing all roles). First, they create the world of the plot (medieval, fantasy world, etc...), then, everybody creates characters for themselves. The character should have a history (inside the invented world of the game), should have a name, and family. Its family could be others' characters, or be told about by the creator of the character. Then, there must be a plot line is agreed on, so all characters are going to develop within this certain plot.
People who are plying roles gather and interact in different situations, and from the reacting between the characters, the plot line gets improved.
If they choose to act it rather than write it, then, they should be left alone to continue their acting and developing their characters in their own way.
There are two ways to act the role playing, either writing down then acting. Or acting without writing. Then, when it comes to an end (end of the plot, end of time, etc.. they can select the best of the game and make it a play).
