There are many factors that could account for this -- stress, too much caffeine, etc. Of course, you should consult a physician. But, in the meantime, you could try to exercise during the day, at least 30 min worth (doesn't have to be all at the same time).
Also, try either an antihistamine, or some melatonin, about 30 min before going to bed.

What you can do right now -- before you have a chance to go out and purchase any recommended remedies -- is give yourself time to shut down. It takes me about 2 hours. I turn off the TV and the music, play a little on the computer, but then turn that off about an hour before lights out. Make sure all lights in your room are out. If your clock or computer or sound system has a glowing or blinking light, cover it. Use a sleep mask instead if you can get one. Be sure you're comfortable. Make sure your room is the right temperature for sleeping, and that you're well covered but not too warm. Quiet helps, too. Also, be sure to avoid all types of caffeine (sodas, coffee, tea and tea drinks, chocolate, etc) for 8 hours before bedtime. Limit sugars 2 hours before bed.
If you're a thnker and can't get your mind to shut off, recite a long memorized list of something -- the periodic table elements, the books of the Bible, the Presidents in order, State capitals, etc. Or you can make alphabetical lists. Go through and come up with a plant (or an animal or a kid's name or an attribute of God or...) that starts with each consecutive letter of the alphabet. Alphabetize the 50 States.
For your shopping list, you might want to include kava kava root tablets. These help you sleep through the night very nicely. It's a safe herbal, so it's available without restrictions. Taking a calcium supplement right before bed also helps you sleep through better. Also include on your shopping list the eye mask and earplugs to keep the world at bay. If all else fails, a bottle of Tylenol PM should do the trick. Don't use it longer than is recommended, but it could help you develop better sleep patterns. Another thing to add to your shopping list is chamomile tea. That helps you fall asleep. Brew it strong and drink a small cup, though, so you don't have to get up in the middle of the night.

Meditation helps. Get a soothing CD put it in and meditate as you are in bed (use ear plugs if it bothers your significant other). It can relax you and bring you to total peace.
Your body needs more rest for repair of cells. We are supposed to get at least 8 hrs per night. You need to reset your brain to sleep at a certain time like 10pm. You have to make sure you go to sleep at that time and get up at the same time every day including weekends. This will train your mind to shut down at 10 pm. You can also try taking a supplement called Melatonin. It works too.

I have found that drinking an herbal tea like Sleepytime by Celestial seasonings helps before i go to bed. Also you want to limit your caffeine during the day, especially a few hours before you go to sleep.
