Dead battery, bad starter, loose battery or starter connection.
Whoever told him it was a fuel pump has no clue and should not be giving auto advice. Tow it to a reputable auto shop and it will be a lot cheaper than guessing.

Someone gave him the wrong suggestion.
If you try to start the engine and all you hear is a click, here is what to look for.
!. Dead Battery
2. The cable ends that connect to the batter are dirty and/or corroded.
3. Less likely the starter is bad.
4. The solenoid may be bad but since it is clicking it is probably ok.
Note: IF the battery is dead it could be caused by the alternator not working. Just check it out. Good luck. Pops

I hope you ignore most of whats here. There are a couple that are close. LISTEN UP, sorry don't mean to holler, 97 chevy. you got volt meter on dash I believe. Turn on key, volt meter should read about 13 volts. If low you got low battery, Fuel pumps don't go click.Check water in battery, if low fill, that might solve the problem. get battery charger or jump start to see if battery just low or bad. If battery is bad it won't accept charge or jump start. If start, check voltmeter, should read 15 volts, if not then alternator not charging. Need to check before replacing, could be a fuse or wiring problem. If solenoids are bad they don't go click.
NEVER change any part till you know the problem. fuel pumps don't click. If check engine lite is on go to major parts store and ask them to read your trouble codes, it's free. Starter motors don't click. Don't change battery till you have proven it is bad.
Bad ol battery, bad, bad, bad

I think the 97 Chevy has the dual positive batter cables stacked on the positive side of the battery if so remove them and shave some of the plastic off the inside of the outside one to get a better fit between them

i own a repair shop, and if all it does is click it needs a solenoid switch on it for the starter ,it has to turn over before it will run.and it sounds like its not turning over, you need to check the battery and make sure it has a good charge in it also, but if all it does is click it needs a solenoid switch for the starter, good luck with it ,i hope this will help.

If it clicks it sound like a electrical fault, it may be the battery needs to charge or the distributor and HTs are gone try one of those prob the battery (turn the key to ignition and turn on the lights if it goes dim or off when you turn on the car its the battery)

check your battery connections first. then the battery then the starter wires. then the starter solenoid. then the starter. then the fly weel in that order... that is the only thing that will make it "click"
