Without a wick, it would all burn up very fast and big, and would be dangerous.

Hi. The wick provides enough surface area so the heat from the flame can vaporize the oil being absorbed.

It needs that so it can burn.... Something between the oil and the flame...

Flashpoint is too low to burn on it's own.
