It's just selective breeding over generations. They choose the dogs that are most protective of their humans, without being aggressive, and use them to breed the next generation. It's not really territory, because a good protection dog will guard a human wherever it goes. Most of them were bred down from sheep guardians. They've been around for so long, there's nobody alive who can remember how the original dogs became protective or how it was bred into future generations. Training is needed to help control it, but it's not trained into them to be protective- they guard their human if it's in trouble, and if there is no trouble, they are not aggressive or defensive. A well trained personal protection dog would know commands or cues for work versus play, would know how to distinguish a threatening situation, and would have commands to release an attacker or break off a chase. Schutzhund has a lot to do with this, it's the art of training personal protection type dogs with commands. A dog who is being reviewed as a candidate should be: -Independent -Loyal -Obedient -Attentive -Protective -Intelligent -Bombproof (Unafraid of loud noises, sudden movements, etc.) He should not be: -Fearful -Aggressive -Belligerant -Unable or Unwilling to Follow Orders -High Strung / Easily Spooked -Unfocused It's hard to really explain the bond they form, but it's not ownership, it's not territory, it's not parental... it's just instinct.

His Bark is Worse then his bite means that He sounds loud and mean but he doesn't actually bite. IE He yells alot but he doesn't hit anyone.

His bark is "worse" than his bite means he is a loud mouth that can't back it up.
Same as the butt overloading the brain.

An example of that would be a parent, they may yell, but they won't really do anything in the end. A person may act mean and rant and rave, but really with do nothing tot the person or persons involved.

He may sound like he is really going to eat you alive when in actuality he's just going to come up & lick you in the face & wanting attention.
