I don't recall any commandment that prohibits you from doing algebra.

Algebra
> allows you to figure how much money you need to save for college and retirement
> allows you to calculate the price difference between two products at the grocery store
> allows you to figure out how much cement you need to make your patio

Every time I go grocery shopping I use Algebra. I have $50 to spend. I need to get meat, veggies, etc. If I have already spent $37 and I need to get canned veggies for 8 meals for my family. Peas are 1.15 / can, Green Beans .99 / can, Yellow Corn .85 / can and White Corn 1.30 / can . I know my family will eat 2 cans of Green Beans or Yellow Corn, 1 can of Peas or 3 Cans of White Corn at a meal. How many cans of each vegetable do I need to buy to feed my family a variety of vegetables for the 8 meals but not go over my budget?

I also use Algebra when I am planning road trips, camping trips, family vacations etc.

I also use it a lot in my job, I design software. My applications run on Windows and over the Internet.

Get over being bitter about Algebra, it not only IS a skill that you will use, it also teaches a way of thinking - a way of approaching a problem in a logical way and displaying the steps used to 'solve' the problem. People who use this approach in other areas of their lives find it greatly helpful on the road to success.

Hope that helps.

It's more of the concept of algebra, being able to figure out the problem, in a step by step process, in order to get the problem resolved. With algebra, you need to follow a list of steps and if not down in the right order, the answer will be wrong.

For example cooking, if you skip an ingredient or two, chances our what you cooked wont come out right.
