I've done this , with a rotary cutting tool (dremel , etc.) and a small cut-off wheel. You can make a small cut (slit) with it.

It depends on how narrow. A milling machine is the obvious answer but you could "chain drill" using a smaller diameter drill then file the resulting holes out until you have the slot that you require.Any machine shop should be able to help.
