It originated from carving turnips. A man named Jack was such a pain, that when he died neither Heaven or Hell would let him in. Instead, he had to roam the Earth with only a turnip lantern for light. The tradition evolved to pumpkins over time.

Yeah, it means Wal-Mart will take in loads of money from candy, costume, and pumpkin sales. Then they will but life insurance on senior citizens and make themselves the beneficiary. That's how rich people think.

It's either to scare off demons and evil spirits....or to light the way for the spirits who rise from the grave or something along those lines.....I think the first one actually might be gargoyles....
