The Church gave much stability in the Medieval times. If the Roman Empire had fought and won the wars then Rome still would be a strong army and still would be the influence of the world.

The Roman Catholic Church.

There were no universities at the time and governments and armies were usually small kingdoms. Too small to have any unifying effect... though Charlemagne did a pretty good job about 3 centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire.

D, D, D. up until the reformation. which by the way, was successful due to the immense growth of the ottoman empire (a largely islamic empire). the church was kept busy trying to ward off the ottomans.

in eastern europe it would have been the byzantine version of christianity and in western europe the catholics. Islam had been spreading through north africa, persia and the spain and portugal areas
