i live in a 4 bedroom house in which only 2 are occupied. we usually just turn on the heater overnight before going to bed because it gets cold and so that it's not freezing when we wake up. would it be more cost effective to get 2 portable heaters than to turn on the central heater overnight?

Keep your central heating on during the night. Especially during the winter you are asking for trouble if only portable heaters are on. Pipes will freeze during the winter if it gets cold enough. To be more cost effective do not turn on and off your central heating.
Your central heating system will keep the temperature in your home at a certain temperature so it won't be running all the time.
Portable heaters waste more energy. In the long run central heater will keep costs low and it would keep things running more effectively.

Have you weatherized all windows & doors ? And a electric blanket is great! program your central system to come on prior to getting out of bed and close off all rooms that are unused forcing that heat to redirect faster

but a portible heater with a fan is best!!and with temp gadge.

GOOD LUCK & KEEP WARM!

close off the rooms and plug the heater vents in the rooms not needing heat provided they have no water or need to be heated and go buy a programable themostat and set it up so it lowers the tempature when your not around. a 3 -5 dreegee tempture drop will save you money and not burn up the electrical bill. if you lower the heat too much it will cost u more to reheat the place back up again

Probably not. Space heaters, presumably electric, are usually expensive to run. Keeping central heat setting at 68 deg. and an extra blanket should keep you warm enough. If your house insulation is lacking, it may need upgrading.
