The way I understand it, if you ask a question and don't choose a best answer, you will lose 5 points. Everyone who does answer gets 2 points just for answering. So if you ask a question, be sure to choose a best answer, then you get your points back.

You get two points for answering a question. People who don't feel like answering steal the points by posting a message like you saw.
