Here is the deal - when movies are made, they have a distributor and movie theaters that show them. As another poster said, theaters used to make lots of money per ticket. But in the last 10 years, the theaters have been squeesed out of the profits. Hence there are no more independent theaters - all we have are huge Regal Cinemas and Loew's Theaters.

But the deals work this way. For the first week a movie is released, the company that produced and distributed the film keep something like 95% of the ticket sales. In the weeks after that, the theaters get more of the percentage but its not that much. The movie makers do eventually keep the majority of the profits, which is eaten up by the actors, production costs, all all the middle men . . .

Another poster said that theaters buy the film copies for a high price but that is not true. Blockbuster and Netflix buy their DVDs for a high price

The way I understand it is that movie theaters buy the reels that plays the movie. Each reel cost a huge amount. The ticket price is what the use to get the money back for purchasing the reels. They also use concession to cover the loss of movies that flop. This is why not all movie houses carry the same movies.

The movie theaters have to report how many tickets are sold for each movie being shown. The studios then charge a set fee per ticket (usually about $4-5 for first run movies). The movie theaters (or the theater chains) then send the studios checks to pay their cut.

Movie distributors used to get 'half' the ticket price and theatre owners got the other half. Now, it's my understanding that, theatre owners barely get 10% of the ticket whilst the movie companies get the rest! That is why theatre owners have to charge so much for concessions, they tell us. Thing is, when I was young and theatre owners were getting their half of the ticket, they were still charging outrageous prices for concessions, so I'm not sure I believe them now when they say they don't get but 10%. I just feel they get more.
