Generally I avoid religion and politics beyond very casual remarks. Both often lead to arguments and you are in a no win situation in either of them, you can't convert the choir and everyone has their own song to sing.

i'm usually open to any topics with anyone at first then I start to whittle down what to avoid with certain people...
one guy at work I have to steer very clear of anything that could somehow be related to "energies" (in the spiritual sense) because I get to sit through a 20 minute lecture of babble that I can't follow

I'm open to discussion about almost anything, especially since I love a good debate. However, I do avoid conversations that offend my religion or family backgroud since they can be so hurtful as to make me cry... and crying doesn't make a good debate nor conversation. :)
