The pattern of the injuries indicates that Mayella was beaten by someone who led almost exclusively with his left hand. Tom's left hand was useless because of his injuries, so he couldn't have done it.

Bob Ewell, however, was left handed.

Also, since she had finger marks all the way around her neck, someone who could only use one hand couldn't have made them.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is an *excellent* novel, I highly recommend it.

They're both right in the answers above. The man on trial was right handed because of a cotton gin accident I believe it was. Her injuries indicate that a left handed person beat her and Mayella's father was left handed, so it's believed that he's the one that beat her when he was drunk.

Because her injuries clearly show that they were caused by someone who was right-handed (her father) and not left-handed (the Black guy on trial).
