Please help. I don't want to pay a whole bunch to take it to the vet. And while your at it, how do you tell a garter snake's sex??

Yes it's normal, I used to have a snake and when I fed it, it would always go for me before the food!

use a pair of tongs or wear gloves when feeding otherwise your snake, whether he knows you or not (he's not a cat) will always associate your hand with food. The only way to accurately sex a snake is to have it probed. PLEASE do not attempt this yourself as an unexperienced person can cause severe damage to the snake. Only a qualified person such as a veterinarian should do this.

are you feeding it in the same tank as his home this may be the problem i have always fed mine in his home but hes a ball i hear most snakes need a separate feeding tank

it depends if u had it for a while, if yes and he knows u then no. if u just got him and he doesnt know u then yes. best of luck to u
