from a caucastion perspective I think it has to do with the past issues when white people totally were ignorant and behaved the way they did towards the black race. I think that has still been taught somehow over generations and now it is offensive to the black race. Which I dont blame them. It may be a double standard on the surface, but not when you take into account the pain of their ancestors. Regardless of race, I do believe just for respect anything like that should not be said within any groups of people. I believe in a more christian lifestyle.

Sometimes it's okay for a white person to call a black person
"n i g g a" ...
... if they are VERY good buddies with them and the black person knows it's not a slur ... that white person is just being one of the gang. I've seen it happen, and it was ok with the black. I have a black friend who I joke around with who tells me I'm
"a funny n i g g a" .... and he means it affectionately.
It's all in the INTENTION. Mostly it's not okay when a white calls a black a n i g g er (that's different from n i g g a) because they mean it as a slur.
Still ... I understand your point, and can see how it would be confusing ... especially when trying to teach children not to do this and they hear adults doing it.

It is not meant in a bad way for one black person to say it to the other black person because it is a greeting. You must be crazy to think that if you are white, green, yellow, blue, etc can say it to a black person like that. It has been looked upon as such a bad word for so long..due mainly to the fact that the dictionary describes the word as a slang for trash. I agree with you though, you shouldn't use it even if you are black. I wouldn't dare approve that any day.

I think it is called double standards. I never had any desire to call anyone with this word. But I don't like it when race is casually referenced in this manner. Makes me feel that they emphasize that they have an internal circle where noone else is welcomed. I think it is a form of racism. They pose themselves as different from everyone else. If they feel it is OK to do because of the suffering of black people in old times - then all Russians should be allowed to call Germans something bad because of WWII. My point is, it should be dropped.

I think the difference is that the people of the same race who say it to each other share the same history of their race. Even if it's said by a person of another race and said without meaning anything by it, the commonality of a shared history is not there. I joke with my mom because we share the same lineage, the same historical struggles of our ethnicty, but if someone from work would say these things then it might come off as being inappropriate.
There's an air of intimacy about this. If we personally have not experienced living life as a person of another's ethnicity, then we have no right to try to even attempt to try to pull it off. At least that's how I have always seen it.

It is not racism if a black guy ask another black guy
"what's up my n i g g e r? They are the same race.
If a white, Hispanic or any other race say "what's up whitey?"
etc, than that is not racist either. I am German by birth - if
some other German calls me "Kraut" or "Square head" i don't
see that as racism. It is all in who is talking to you.
Lighten up - if your family-in-law does not think anything off it,
than you should just let it be. They are happy and you should
be happy to!

That is a tough one as you always have to be carefull as there are still some really nasty people out there that are very racist. i dont understand it at all either its just like my parter who is italian and calls him self and family wog but i wouldnt dare say it to him as i guess they get a little offended, i think that as these people were growing up they got alot of s h i t about it so when it comes from a white person it cn be offensive. its just to hard that question but i hope it helps a little.

I personally think it's stupid to call someone a name that not everyone can say! And people wonder why there is still so much segregation in the world! HMM... not hard to figure out is it? People segregate themselves by acting the way they do!

It could be like being in a biker club called 'satans sons' (which is purely fictional.) If you are a member of the club then its ok to "say whats up my satan" but if not a member then you would be seen as impolite or foolishly bold?
