the 256mb ram is just on the video card and the system ram is 512mb

Both are entry level stuff. Not the right place to be if you want good game/graphics performance.
If you can't get a pentium level chip (L2 cache is vital for speed) then you are probably looking for the higher ghz number but neither is what you should be using.
And you need more RAM that 256Mb if you want things to run properly.
