Since you are not the original owner determing the answer the question can be a real problem. First off, you do not know how well it has been taken care of for the last 5 to 6 years. Second, you must be determined to perform all the necessary maintenance needed to the car due to neglect and as time goes by.

Most used cars have not received all the maintenance necessary to ensure that they will last a long time. Now, you have to step in and do what the previous owner was unwilling to do.

As far as I know the Eclipse is a good car. I have had cars that I put as many as 225,000 to 235,000 at the end of their "lives". Each of those cars were old when I bought them and they had been neglected. I drove each of them AT LEAST another 60,000 by taking good care of them. They generally performed well considering they had been treated crappy. I sold my 1986 Acura with 220,000 miles on it earlier this year. It ran fine, I was just tired of such a little car.

You should be able to drive almost any car 300,000 miles provided it has been treated well it's entire life.

A car will last as long as you want to keep putting money into it. I've got a VW with 250,000 miles it, and I'm gonna put another motor in it soon.

For the Japanse cars, the problem is that they are more difficult than American or German cars to work on, and hence more expensive. In addition, the Japanese don't repair cars, and they get scrapped as soon as a rust spot appears in Japan, so trying to keep one going past 10 years is sometimes an adventure.

What will eventually happen is that you'll get rocked with a major repair, and realize that you can get 3-4 car payments out of that much money, and you'll trade cars.
