An electric generator? All you need is a permanent magnet and a conducting loop. If you're just looking for a demonstration, get a piece of bell wire and wrap it around a pencil. Once you have it wrapped, remove the pencil. If you drop a magnet down the center, you'll generate a voltage, which you can see by hooking it up to a voltmeter.
