We have had this unfortunate experience many times. Golden snails seem to be the worst. Snails seem to be opportunists and especially in smaller tanks. If you have a Betta in a small bowl with a snail for example, most likely the snail will get around to eating it. It is true snails dispose of dead fish too but they go after live fish at any opportunity especially if the snails not properly fed.

I witnessed a snail that had gripped a baby Plecostomas? & sucked it dead. This was at Wal-Mart. I notified the clerk, who then tried to pry the fish from the snail's awesome grip. That day I learned something new about snails.

Mystery snails are harmless. They'll eat dead fish. They can carry disease, and too many will foul the water, but that's the same as any fish.

Not likely but snails also carry parasites into your tank which may be fatal for your fish.

i don't think so, maybe when a fish died in your tank and you ignored it for quite awhile and the fish ended up decaying, then the snail can have its meal

Snails only eat a fish that is sick or a fish that is already dead. They don't attack healthy fish.
