I feel that it is about time that someone said enough is enough. How thin is too thin? When rib bones are jutting out and the models look like they just crawled out of a concentration camp. The problem with this is that young girls wish to emulate these models and what is happening is a drastic increase in the number of eating disorder which are being reported every year. When the ideal beauty is a waif thin model then even a child of normal healthy proportions is going to feel overweight. The normal weight for models has dropped drastically since the seventies and even if you look at pictures of the likes of Cindy Crawford you can see that by todays standards she would be considered obese. It is time for women to write to the fashion companies and magazines and demand that women be portrayed in healthier fashion for the sake of the children of North America.

Yes and No. I agree that models that are unhealthily thin should be banned, but I do not agree that they should use BMI to assess this. Models are known to have naturally very petite frames, so they will already weigh less than the average woman the same height, regardless of their body fat. What I do think they need to check is body fat and if it falls below 10%-12%, then they should be banned, as this is unealthy and a poor role model for young girls.

It would certainly be nice to see some more 'normal' sized girls on the catwalk and not anorexic looking skeletons. HTH : )

Absolutely. I've seen pictures of some of the NY fashion shows and all their models look anorexic! There's nothing healthy about the body image they present as "ideal" for the designers' clothing. Normal women don't look like that, and if the designers want real people to buy their clothes, they should have normal-sized people to wear them. Milan has the right idea.

Yes, it makes sense. There's too much pressure out there for women to be outrageously thin, and models don't help. Too many girls and models are becoming anorexic and bulemic (it's become a fad almost, just search for it in MySpace or Xanga groups) because of media stereotypes.

Check out www.campaignforrealbeauty.ca. It's a campaign that Dove is doing to try and broaden the definition of beauty. They did a study that shows that only 2% of women worldwide consider themselves beautiful and so they want to make ALL women realize their own beauty.

YES. Definitely. A lot of girls have a bad body image because of models. And I hate seeing some models, because they are so skinny it is disgusting to look at them. I agree with a person above, they should have models with all different body types.

yeah i guess thats koo but the modeling industry needs a balance...if ur gonna get models to model the way fashion looks, u need to get models that fit the mode of all sizes and they need to quit callin people in size 12s plus size. Models should be of varying weights...skinny, medium, atheltic builds, thick whateva...i mean, to me its doin way too much to our society to try to confine women into a certain size...the influence is powerful these days...i dont really like it even as a 7/8 chick...but damn, lets keep it real, healthy and sexy. its sad that there isnt more encouragement for that side too.....

i am not aware of any rule but as far as the "stick" models i think it is sick, and damaging to society. It makes younger girls think that they are fat when they weight about 120 and it is crazy. If I was a man I wouldnt want a girl with ribs and bones poking out everywhere.

that's probably a good thing b/c then they can't get sickly thin. And that my in the long run change American women's 'perfect skinny' image. (adolesants, adults, everyone) But it is a little strange that the goverment is controling these girls weights, it seems like a personal descision in some ways.
