I have never stamped before and don't quite know how to begin. If I use embossing powder on a stamp, do I need a specific type of ink? I noticed that there are several types and I don't know if I need dye based vs. pigment based, etc. Also, is it as easy as sprinkling the powder on the wet ink and using a heating tool??

You should use clear embossing ink, which you can find at your local craft store (Michael's, etc).

And, yes it is that easy. Place your stamp on the clear embossing ink pad, then stamp your paper or whatever you are using ... sprinkle a small pile of powder over the ink and sort of tap it around to cover all of the ink. Then carefully shake the rest of the excess powder off your page and apply the heating tool. When using the heating tool, be careful not to put it too close to the embossing ink and be patient. If you are not careful, the embossing ink can dry up and make small burn marks on your paper. It takes a minute to heat up and you will begin to notice a little bubbling of the ink until it changes. Hope this helps.

In order to use embossing powder you need to have a pigment based ink, or one that has a lot of glycerin in it. The thicker ink will hold the powder long enough so that you can heat it up and melt it. If you use a dye-based in, the ink will dry and the powder blow away before it can melt and stick.

All you need to do is this:

1) Stamp the image with pigment ink onto any sort of paper (matte or glossy)
2) sprinkle the embossing powder on the image, and tapp off the excess. Put that back into the bottle to save for another embossing.
3) Practice safe embossing by putting the lid back on the bottle so that if you accidently hit the bottle you don't get powder everywhere. (grin)
4) Holding your heat tool about 6 inches above the area to be embossed, heat the powder until it melts. You should be able to see when it has all melted. Don't overheat, as you can burn the powder, paper or both.

HOpe that helps!

Do you have a joann fabric, or Michael's store near you or any craft store? Those would be the best places to start. they have wonderful staffs that could help you get the supplies you need for stamping. Embossing powder uses a special ink that is clear and is "stickier" then coloured ink and it will not change the colour of the embossing powder...if you are using a clear or glittery powder you can use the coloured inks to get different effects with it....rubber stamping is sooooo much fun I have about 200 stamps in my collection right now and growing.....I hope you have just as much fun as i do with it...good luck
